Zaha Hadid X Porcelanosa Part Two: Zaha Hadid Design Gallery, Holborn

Come and take a tour of the Hadid design gallery and be prepared to be immersed into a futuristic world of design, one of which could only have been created from the mind of the most influential, Dame Zaha Hadid.

As you know, I came to discover the Zaha Hadid design gallery through an invitation to the bloggers launch of the new Zaha Hadid X Porcelanosa bathroom collection, Vitae. This is when I began my path of discovery into the life and work of the incredible Dame. I wanted to post about the gallery separately, as it in itself it possesses a whole lot of magic.

Dame Zaha primarily worked as an architect, whilst delving into various other design mediums such as interior and product design. Dame Zaha is one of the most successful female architects in history, winning many outstanding awards such as the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the Stirling Prize and she was also the first woman ever to be awarded the RIBA Gold Medal. She is the definition of girl power!

The gallery has two floors. On the first floor you can find a selection of Zaha's work, ranging from furniture, to artworks and homewares. The ground floor is where the Vitae collection was housed, along with a selection of models which acted as research for the design of Hadid tower buildings. These models in themselves are pretty amazing, to think they could have actually been built is phenomenal.

Zaha Hadid has the kind of creative mind that can take you on a journey into another world through her designs. Zaha Hadid transforms the aesthetic of the every day object into a visual exploration of geometric and fluid shape.

What strikes me the most about Dame Zaha's work is the sense of distinct style that is so evidently present throughout all of the work she has created. Although each piece is different, her use of shape and form is consistently evident. From her designs, I see many representations of the female form. Her work is delicate, yet structurally solid with many uses of curves and flowing lines.

My favourite piece in the gallery at present is the liquid glacial dining table and chairs. The theme of water is so present here that it almost feels as though the table is water that has been frozen in time. Made from acrylic, this piece encapsulates running water, ripples and flow. The glass vases stemming from the table top emulates that of growth from water.

Throughout the gallery, you are taken on a visual experience with Zaha Hadid design. The below images are examples of seating and Dame Zaha's ability to take something simple, such as a chair or bench and completely reconstruct it so that it is almost unrecognisable, futuristic and so very "Zaha".

It is with great sadness that Dame Zaha unexpectedly passed away earlier this year. The mark she left on this world will be forever an inspiring reminder of just what can be achieved if you put your mind to it. I am in awe of Dame Zaha, the work she did and the social and cultural boundaries she pushed past in order to pursue her passion. I did not write the below message, but I don't think I could have summed it up any better...

"You have to really believe not only in yourself; you have to believe that the world is actually worth your sacrifices."
